Hoover C1404 A real Hoover, still made in the USA
I have a Hoover Elite 600 series that is officially thirty-five years old. In that time, it has needed exactly two belts and nothing else. After being dropped, kicked down numerous flights of stairs and generally abused, decided to relegate it to the garage for vacuuming up the concrete floor.
I was delighted to see that Hoover still makes the exact same vacuum cleaner and that it is still made in the USA. We had bought the top rated Hoover Windtunnel Bagless three years ago and it's been in for repairs five times - two on/off switches, a burned out motor, a shorted cord and a broken self-propelled switch. I've replaced both belts five times in three years, three sets of expensive HEPA filters and frankly, it's a pain to empty. And, it's made in China. It doesn't clean all that well, losing lots of suction within minutes of use because the HEPA filter is getting clogged. I will never own another bagless vac and if Hoover stops making units in the USA, then I'll never own another Hoover.
I happy to say that this machine performs as flawlessly as my old one did thirty-five years ago. I think the only reason they've slapped the commercial label on it is because it is so utilitarian looking with no bells or whistles. However what is does exceptionally well is CLEAN. Before I took the Windtunnel to its final resting place at the dump, I thoroughly vacuumed our family room twice. Then I went back over it with this Elite and was amazed at how much additional dirt and dog hair it picked up. To be fair, I then went over it again with the Windtunnel where it picked up nothing.
I don't know if I will get another thirty-five years out of this machine - I suspect I will but it is such an improvement over all the expensive vacuums we've tried over the years, that even if it only lasts ten, I will buy another one. Heck, I might buy another one and just leave it packed up in case they stop production of this one. We never used all the fancy on-board tools of the Windtunnel anyway and bought a handheld vac specifically for stairs and furniture.
If all you want is a vacuum that cleans, uses disposable bags and will last, this is the only vacuum on the market worth owning. And, if you're like me, it spends all its time stored in a closet anyway so who cares what it looks like.

Hoover C1404 Vacuum So Far, So Good.
Hoover C1404 Vacuum So Far, So Good.
This was an easy product to assemble. It's light and works well on bare floors. I like how it handles it's dust load, as the soil moves up through the core of the machine and dumps into the bag. I have three cats and a wood stove so I need something to keep the wooly-boogers under control, as well as the wood chips that get everywhere. It doesn't have a light but since I consider vacuuming a daylight activity, I didn't miss it. The extra long cord is a bonus, I always hooked my old one to a an extension so I could reach the whole house from one plug. It's no louder than my old vacuum and when I get it out I want the cats to run for their lives anyway. You do have to be careful it will pick up fairly large items including spare change which I imagine isn't very good for the brush. The only thing I can't tell you is how long it will last.

Hoover C1404 BEST BUY, Excellent Commercial Vacuum
Hoover C1404 BEST BUY, Excellent Commercial Vacuum
I purchased this vacuum for use in a private school where the old olefin carpeting takes constant abuse. I have tired several different brands of vacuum and this one has proven itself to be the ideal fit.
PROS (for it's intended purpose)
1) It's got a really powerful motor. It starts sucking up dirt a few inches before the vacuum head even reaches it.
2) It's got a very aggressive beater bar, which is perfect for this type of heavy traffic carpeting.
3) It still works well on the hard surface flooring. It'd probably scrape up real hardwood, but it does great on laminate floors, tile, etc.
4) You don't have to vacuum an area twice. One pass is all you need.
5) When you have 3 hours of vacuuming per night, you're gonna be glad it's only about ten pounds.
6) Bags are cheap, last a really long time, and are easy to change. Forget canisters, they're a horribly inefficient gimmick. Those commercials always show you how easy it is to empty the canister, but they always forget to mention that you will have between 1 and 3 filters to clean on a constant basis. Stick to bags, canisters are not easier.
CONS
1) Doesn't really bother me, but it's noisy. It's slightly less noisy than a blender. It's definitely an after-hours vacuum.
2) Man...I wish that power cord was like five feet longer.
High traffic? Lots of square footage? Daily Use? Don't need on-board tools?
This is the serious vacuum you need.

Hoover C1404 BEST PRICE
Hoover C1404 BEST PRICE
I purchased this Hoover vacuum for the private school where I work. I bought one just like it last spring. They are both used every day to vacuum 14 classrooms and a long hallway. They pick up dirt a lot better than the commercial vacuum we were previously using. They are lightweight, easy to handle and the bags are easy to change. The first Hoover is still working great so I bought a second one just like it because the teachers all wanted to use the Hoover instead of the heavy commercial vacuum.

Hoover C1404 Vacuum So far so good.
Hoover C1404 Vacuum So far so good.
Bought this because my mentally handicapped brother is ROUGH on vacuums. He destroys them in about six months time (give or take). We have three dogs so there's LOTS of dog hair for it to pick up regularly as well. In the first week of use, the vacuum has been a trooper. It picks up the hair with ease and it's built very solidly so I'm not worried when I hear it crashing around like I would be if it was a Dyson. I'll update when we've had more hours of vacuuming with it.

Hoover C1404 Elite Excellent value for the price.
Hoover C1404 Elite Excellent value for the price.
I was looking for a light-weight, powerful vacuum for hardwood floor and area rugs that I can take upstairs and downstairs. Since I am over 80, weight is important to me. One can always buy a heavily-advertised, high-priced or over-priced one that weighs about 9 lb. But I didn't want to spend the money. The Hoover Commercial Elite is just what I need and I am happy with it. It is a commercial model, meaning it does not have the cosmetics and matcing color schemes that appeal to the ladies of the house. It cleans well and it is easy to switch from hardwood setting to carpet setting. It is noisy though but I don't mind, possibly because of my age.

Hoover C1404 Elite great vacuum!
Hoover C1404 Elite great vacuum!
very powerful...great on bare floor or carpet...the long cord makes it so convenient...the dust bag is huge compared to other vacuums i have had...light weight easy to maneuver.
Hoover C1404 Elite Perfect for home use.
I have a golden retriever so I vacuum alot. My previous cannister vacuum was heavy and eventually fell apart. The Hoover commercial Elite Upright is extremely light, no wasted parts so I assume it will last longer than a non-commercial vacuum, and priced significantly cheaper than a cannister vacuum with comparable suction. It is easy to use, and so far I really like it.
