Hoover C1404 BEST BUY, Excellent Commercial Vacuum
I purchased this vacuum for use in a private school where the old olefin carpeting takes constant abuse. I have tired several different brands of vacuum and this one has proven itself to be the ideal fit.
PROS (for it's intended purpose)
1) It's got a really powerful motor. It starts sucking up dirt a few inches before the vacuum head even reaches it.
2) It's got a very aggressive beater bar, which is perfect for this type of heavy traffic carpeting.
3) It still works well on the hard surface flooring. It'd probably scrape up real hardwood, but it does great on laminate floors, tile, etc.
4) You don't have to vacuum an area twice. One pass is all you need.
5) When you have 3 hours of vacuuming per night, you're gonna be glad it's only about ten pounds.
6) Bags are cheap, last a really long time, and are easy to change. Forget canisters, they're a horribly inefficient gimmick. Those commercials always show you how easy it is to empty the canister, but they always forget to mention that you will have between 1 and 3 filters to clean on a constant basis. Stick to bags, canisters are not easier.
CONS
1) Doesn't really bother me, but it's noisy. It's slightly less noisy than a blender. It's definitely an after-hours vacuum.
2) Man...I wish that power cord was like five feet longer.
High traffic? Lots of square footage? Daily Use? Don't need on-board tools?
This is the serious vacuum you need.

Hoover C1404 REVIEWS
Hoover C1404 Happy to find this vacuum.
I had a Hoover Elite for nearly 20 years and I loved it. It was a workhorse, but it gave out right before Christmas in 2007. In a hurry to get a new vacuum to prepare for guests, I purchased a Dirt Devil. It was a disaster from the beginning. It blew dust everywhere instead of sucking it and although it was lightweight, there was no convenient place to grab it. The onboard attachments were very short so the vacuum HAD to be picked up to actually use them. I could go on and on about the negatives so I was not all that unhappy when it broke - except it was on Christmas day 2009 as I was doing the last minute vacuuming prior to picking up my house guest at the airport. This time I determined I would get a good vacuum cleaner even if it meant I had to go without vacuuming for awhile. Fortunately, I found this one and when it arrived, it was fairly easy to assemble. When I used it, I was very happy to have the power of Hoover back. Even though I had not been able to thoroughly vacuum for a few weeks, it sucked up pet fur with only 1 or 2 passes (instead of the 8-10 passes the Dirt Devil required) and took less time to vacuum my entire house than it took to vacuum a 6x9 area rug with the Dirt Devil. This is definitely a worthwhile purchase. it's not the prettiest vacuum in the world, but it more than makes up for lack of glamorous looks by how well it works. I highly recommend this vacuum.
Update: It's been about 1-1/2 years since my first review and I still LOVE this vacuum!

If you are looking for a no nonsense vacuum, without bells and wistles and only does what you need it to do, then buy this vacuum. Easy to assemble, without a filter to change, this vacuum is worth every penny. Do not go to box store and buy a vacuum for fifty dollars that will only last for a couple years. Get this one and use it for the rest of your life.

This vacuum was suggested to me by a carpet cleaner
whose skill in cleaning and rejuvenating my carpet is phenomenal.
It is a simple, uncomplicated machine without
bells and whistles; does a great job of removing
pet hair and at the same time makes my 25 year old
carpet look almost brand new. And a bonus feature
is that it is light weight. Highly recommended.

Finally, a vacuum cleaner that, unlike the ones in the stores with 50 million attachments and ridiculous claims, does just what you want - if all you want is a powerful, no-nonsense cleaner. Plus, I have mild asthma and the two bagless vacuums I tried choked me up when emptying the cannisters to the point where I had to have my husband finish the emptying process! At least the bags keep all the dust and pet fur contained, and are easily disposed of. Also, the weight of this vacuum is just fine, not too heavy. Plus, there is a definite self-propelled feel to the vacuum that makes it just that much easier to navigate. Good job, Hoover!

Our housekeeping staff is very pleased with this vacuum. It is light, easy to push and does an excellent job on our low pile oriental rugs. Much better than our Orecks which cost at least twice as much!
